NINETEENTH ANNUAL BIBLE-IN-A-YEAR STUDY CYCLE

Start: 25 Tishri 5785 / October 27, 2024
End: Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah 22 Tishri 5786 / October 14, 2025
In memory of YECHIEL EZRA ben ARI YONA Schwartz HY"D

We begin the Book of Joshua chapters 1 and 2 on the day after Simchat Torah, (this year Thursday September 30), and then study 2 chapters every weekday going through Joshua, Judges, Samuel 1 & 2 and Kings 1 & 2. After that we continue with Daniel, Ezra and Nehemiah (which continue chronologically where II Kings ends). As an introduction to prophecy through the ages, we then continue with the 12 Shorter Prophets. After that we embark on the "wisdom literature", Proverbs and Job (but the one-year cycle does not include Psalms). We then review the history of Israel with Chronicles 1 & 2, after which we embark on Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Isaiah in that order (since Jeremiah is mostly reproof, Ezekiel reproof and consolation, while Isaiah is mostly consolation). This takes us to the next Succot. Prior to each of the major festivals, we take a few days to study the relevant Megilah.
Subscribers to Azamra's daily Know-Your-Bible study emails receive commentary on the day's chapters in their mailbox in advance. Occasionally, when the chapters are very short, we may study three in one day.

When a fool comes into the study hall and sees everyone busy learning, he asks, "How does a person start learning Torah?" They tell him: "First he learns to read. Then he studies the Five Books of Moses, then the Prophets, then the rest of the written Torah, then he goes on to the Oral Torah, the Talmud, the laws and the aggada." The fool says, "When will I ever learn all this?" and he runs away. But the wise man studies a chapter a day until he completes the entire Torah.
(Midrash Rabba Devarim 8:3)
